For Your Drive: #s are not scary

August 30, 2018

1,546 miles of driving last week. Many of you are familiar with the routine: check the weather, pack your clothes, wonder why you need four pairs of shoes, prep some snacks, fur-proof the car for the dog (never works), and finally setup your playlist. Usually I like a diverse list of audio books, podcasts and new music. That was the plan... but just like my time spent in my office recently, I became consumed by learning proven techniques and stretching my comfort zone.

Are you scared yet? I almost worded the last sentence "... I became consumed by modern marketing." I was afraid I would lose some people.

The algorithm gods favor displaying the newest marketing techniques in my feeds, emails, and advertisements because it's what I do, it's what I search for. But if you are an entrepreneur, in marketing, advertising or PR, these articles flow through your digital stream like the mighty Mississip.

So the question: What am I missing out on? OR What am I ignoring? On my 24+ hour drive I listened to David Meerman Scott's "The New Rules of Marketing & PR: How to Use Social Media, Online Video, Mobile Applications, Blogs, News Releases and Viral Marketing to Reach Buyers Directly". The title is aptly descriptive but let me quickly break it down from my point of view.

There are so many options as to how to reach your customers. Direct contact through tech can be overwhelming or even intimidating to the point where it’s easier to just stick to your guns... use the traditional media routes or word of mouth. Who wants to spend countless hours sorting through paid advertisements, watching strangers on youtube and other gobbledygook that leaves you demoralized? This book is especially useful because it can be read chronologically or you can skip directly to chapters of particular interest to you. Both traditional and new age techniques are taught in a tone of voice that is easy to follow. I've known that blogs, video, social media and websites, press releases etc. are all connected. This book ties them all together to what might suit you best. It is a fantastic overview for a broad range of occupations and job titles.

So for market growth enthusiasts, before your next road trip or casual in-office audio experience, give this book a sample listen. Chances are a minimum of one or two of the techniques would apply to your cause. You should be able to bring new effective ideas to your business, no matter your particular role.

Let me know what you think! What else are you listening to? What strategies have worked for you? What have you found most effective?

This is not a paid advertisement, I have never been approached by David Meerman Scott or any of his affiliates concerning promotion for his material, I genuinely found this book very helpful and exciting.
